A Training Sandbag for Every Workout
The Skirmish is an adjustable 20 to 40 lb training sandbag: a workout sandbag for home and garage gyms, a fitness sandbag for boot camps and group classes, and a weighted sandbag for unit PT. Fill it light for high-rep conditioning, or load it to 40 lb for heavy carries and the Army CFT sandbag lift.
Ways to train with the Skirmish
- Army CFT sandbag lift: fill it to 40 lb and practice lifting it onto a platform, the same weight as each of the sixteen CFT sandbags. More on our CFT sandbag lift guide.
- Sandbag carries: bear hug, shoulder and front carries for grip, core and work capacity. Try our sandbag carry workout.
- Squats and lunges: bear hug squats, front squats and walking lunges. Our sandbag squat guide covers the variations.
- Cleans, presses and slams: explosive full-body work where the shifting sand makes every rep a little different.
- HYROX training: fill it to 10 kg (22 lb) for the Women's Open sandbag lunge weight. For the 20 kg and 30 kg bags, step up to the Raider.
- Conditioning circuits: pair it with our sandbag workout for a full session with one piece of gear.
Pick your weight: 20, 30 or 40 lb
The two filler bags let you set the load anywhere from 20 to 40 lb. Start near 20 lb to learn the movements, use about 30 lb for circuits and carries, and fill it to 40 lb when you want a true 40 lb sandbag for strength work or CFT prep. Weigh the bag after filling so you know your exact load.
Why train with a sandbag?
Sand shifts as you move, so your grip, core and stabilizers work to control the load on every rep. A sandbag is also gentler on floors than iron when you set it down hard, and it ships unfilled, so you fill it where you train.
Frequently Asked Questions
How heavy is the Skirmish sandbag?
It adjusts from 20 to 40 lb with the two filler bags included. It ships unfilled: add play sand from a hardware store, or dirt from the field, and check the total weight on a scale.
Is the Skirmish a good sandbag for the Army CFT?
The Army Combat Field Test sandbag lift uses sixteen 40 lb sandbags lifted onto a 65-inch platform. Fill the Skirmish to 40 lb to train that exact weight. It is a commercial training sandbag, not Army-issued equipment. More on our Army CFT sandbags page.
Can my unit order sandbags in bulk?
Yes. We quote unit orders, accept purchase orders and Government Purchase Cards, and offer custom unit logos. One CFT lane needs 16 bags. Request a unit quote.
Skirmish or Raider: which sandbag should I get?
The Skirmish (20 to 40 lb) suits conditioning, carries, beginners and CFT training. The Raider kit (60 to 80 lb) is for heavy cleans, squats and carries. Our sandbag weight guide walks through the choice.
What is the Skirmish made of?
1000D Cordura, made in the USA, built to be slammed, dragged and carried.
Is the Skirmish a good workout sandbag for beginners?
Yes. Fill it to around 20 lb to learn carries, squats and cleans with good form, then add sand as you get stronger. One bag takes you from your first sandbag workout up to 40 lb.
How much sand do I need for a 40 lb sandbag?
About 40 lb of dry play sand. A standard 50 lb bag of play sand from the hardware store fills the Skirmish to 40 lb with some left over.
Is a weighted sandbag good for fitness?
A weighted sandbag trains strength and conditioning at the same time. Because the load shifts, it builds grip and core strength that carries over to real-world lifting, which is why sandbags show up in the Army CFT, HYROX and functional fitness training.
